Farm Overview and History
Farm overview: The farm's coffee is grown under shade using agroforestry systems and adhering to good agricultural practices, meeting the standards set by the Rainforest Alliance. The misty mountainous region is home to multiple protected water springs that provide drinking water to the community of Escaleras in North Yasica. The farm's mountainous terrain is responsible for abundant water production, which feeds into the Yasica River basin. The forest area within the farm's vicinity is a crucial habitat and sanctuary for the area's flora and fauna. Various animals, including black panthers, jaguars, deer, boars, coatis, guatuzas, and birds such as the three-wattled bellbird and quetzal, have been observed. The Black Panther logo represents the farm's commitment to preserving the fauna present within the farm's boundaries. Additionally, 35% of the farm is reserved as a forest reserve within the National Natural Reserve "El Arenal," which is one of the few nebliselva forest reserves in Nicaragua.

History: Maria Felicitas comes from a family with a longstanding history in coffee production. Her ancestors acquired La Verona back in the 1920s. Unfortunately, the farm was unjustly expropriated in 1983 by the Sandinista Regime. However, President Violeta Chamorro restored the farm to the Mairena family in 1996. At the time of its return, the finca was in a state of disrepair and had to be almost entirely rebuilt from scratch.
