Founded in 2005 with support from the Caritas Jaen technical team, Sol y Café began its journey by acquiring the necessary organic and sustainable trade certifications to export to North America and Europe. Starting with 27 clusters of producer groups, it has grown to over 60 producer associations, encompassing approximately 1,000 farming families. Sol y Café operates from a shared office within the Caritas complex in Jaen, where they maintain a small warehouse and quality control lab. Sol y Café has grown steadily, adhering to strict membership criteria. Members are required to actively participate in the cooperative’s development and contribute at least 51% of their estimated harvest. New members must receive approval from existing members or be visited by the cooperative's board president to ensure their commitment to high-quality, organic coffee production. The cooperative’s focus on quality has paid off, with about 80% of the total harvest being exported. Sol y Café’s members consistently perform well in national and international quality competitions. In support of their members, Sol y Café has conducted field experiments that have successfully doubled production, reaching up to 40qq per hectare after a three-year transition. They are now implementing a 300-hectare renovation plan to expand these production gains throughout their region.
