CAFECO In the highlands of central Chiapas, the municipality of La Concordia is home to CAFÉCO, a cooperative founded in 2015 by smallholder producers aiming to improve conditions for coffee-growing families in the region. Situated at around 1,500 meters above sea level, the group manages more than 900 hectares of coffee under Fairtrade Organic certification, with production traceable to 877 farming households.
The coffees are typically processed using a pulped and fermented method, followed by washing, sorting, and drying on raised beds. These tasks are often carried out at the farm level with a focus on consistency and quality, informed by local knowledge and adapted to the mountainous landscape. Chiapas is one of Mexico’s key coffee-producing states, with a high concentration of smallholders and indigenous communities that maintain strong ties to the land. In La Concordia, many producers express pride in seeing the local economy strengthened through coffee, and there's a growing interest among younger generations in learning about good agricultural practices and quality-focused production. Cooperatives like CAFÉCO continue to play a central role in supporting these efforts and promoting long-term sustainability in the region. |
