Farm Overview and History

The micro-mill incorporates a Penagos ecological module that reduces water consumption to only 500 liters per day. The coffee is harvested at the ideal stage of 100% ripeness. The farm has completed 80% of the renovation process and now features new rust-resistant varieties. An integrated system is in place to create compost using high-quality materials, mainly by-products from other agricultural activities such as livestock and poultry production, coffee skin, and other materials. Bioferments are also produced as liquid fertilizer. Annual soil tests are conducted to detect deficiencies and maintain nutrient balance. The farm has used organic management for 20 years, resulting in highly fertile soils.
After becoming aware of the negative impact of chemicals on human health and the environment, the owners of Organic Lum Farm decided to take matters into their own hands. For more than two decades, they have been manually controlling weeds and implementing a shaded coffee system on their farms located in the Occidental Valley in Palmares and San Ramon, Alajuela, at elevations ranging from 1200 to 1400 meters above sea level. In addition to coffee, the farmers cultivate various other crops including Indian cane, bananas, and cacao. They also grow timber trees like Laurel , Cedro amargo and Roble sabana which help maitain a balanced ecosystem on their plantation .
