Morgan Stanley Coffee Report

All eyes went in search of news of frost damage from over the weekend and while there does appear to be some in the  higher elevations of the southern portion of the coffee belt, the extent, while appearing minimal, remains unclear.  The opening minute of trading saw the high print of the day at 14150 (+265) basis September but the action that followed embodied digestion of mixed signals.   Prices backed off to 13750 before official weather reports were released just prior to 8am which instigated the market to sell off another 350 points to the low of the session at 13400 before finding buyers who expressed concern over cold temps tomorrow and possibly Wednesday morning in southernmost Minas. Once word circulated that 531 July 13750 calls, out of the money by 55 points on Friday’s option expiry, were exercised, the trajectory higher resumed rallying back to 14070 with nary a pullback, as those who were going to sell the market on disappointing news had apparently already done so.  Ultimately the market settled just above unchanged reflecting a fulcrum in the vast array of the days sentiments.
