About Uganda's Coffee Sector
Uganda is one of Africa's leading coffee producers, known for both its high-quality Arabica and Robusta beans. Coffee plays a crucial role in the country's economy, providing livelihoods for millions of smallholder farmers. Grown primarily in the central, western, and eastern regions, Uganda's coffee thrives in ideal climates and altitudes. Robusta is the dominant variety, making up about 70% of production. The coffee is harvested twice a year and processed using both wet and dry methods, depending on the region. Despite challenges such as climate change and pests, there are ongoing efforts to improve quality, enhance productivity, and expand local processing to increase value and strengthen Uganda's position in the global coffee market. |
