Arabica Coffee Futures settled higher for the last trading day of the year. The March delivery contract settled on 137.05 per pound, up 1.60 cents. The activity was slow, with volume reaching only 17.173 lots. During the year, Arabica coffee prices gained 8.1%. Volatility was once again very high, trading within a 68 cent range, from a low of 111.35 to a high of 179.55. Weather worries from producing countries and the large participation by funds were the main driving factors. Weakness in producer countries’ currencies, especially Brazil and Colombia, helped stop the movement higher, which also succumbed to larger crops once weather worries faded. During the year, the Brazilian real strengthened by 21%, the Colombian peso strengthened by 5.7% and crude oil gained 42%. ICE certified inventories fell by 482,324 bags, or 27.9%
We wish you a happy New Year’s Eve and much success for 2017.
